Glen...
I would love to see that PDF.
Now that every issue of 73 is online in an archive site, I could search for it, but if you have it, I'd like to see it.
Thanks
Ray

No. The power transformer in the DX-20 is not overloaded. Of course, the transmitter is much simpler in design being just an oscillator / multiplier and a final / multiplier. However, I still would not run the VF-1 from the transmitter for a number of reasons.
The DX-20 doubles in the final to get to 10-meters whereas the DX-35 and DX-40 run "straight through".
Believe it or not, the DX-20 can be put on 6-meters with a single solder joint and a single wire. Back in 1960, with my first DX-20, I discovered if the transmitter is put in the 15-meter position, the oscillator / multiplier easily triples a "standard" 8 MHz crystal (i.e. 8.400 MHz for 50.400 MHz) to 25 MHz. Then, doubling in the final like on 10-meters, by shorting out all but 1.5-turns on the final tank, the transmitter puts out around 10-watts to 12-watts on the 6-meter band. To go back to the "normal" 80-meters through 10-meters, you would just pull the shorting wire from the final tank coil and leave it "hanging in the air". Doing that did not hamper performance on the lower frequencies and the shorting wire could be put back in the coil to get 6-meter operation again.
I do have a PDF of that single page that I can forward to anyone who wants the information.
I actually wrote my very first magazine article about this "conversion", as a junior in high school, and Wayne Green, at 73 Magazine, paid me $30.00 for an article that took up about half of 1-page in the old small sized magazine. $30.00 for about a half-hour's work, in 1961, was unheard of especially for a teenager. That got me started on writing magazine articles.

I recently picked up a very good condition DX 20 at a swap meet for $20 and also a Hallicrafters HT 40 for $25.Would your advice be the same for the DX 20 as for the 35 and 40?
