[Heathkit] DX-100 b general question

Don't run more the 6 mA grid current and 5 mA is better for maximum tube life.  The 6146 family of tubes will generally put out full power at 1.75 mA of grid current which is 3.5 mA for the pair.

Although the Heath manual says 160-watts input for AM phone, the maximum input power for ICAS AM phone operation for the 6146 or 6146A/8298 is 67.5-watts per tube or 135-watts input for the pair.  Actually, running around 120-watts input for CW and 100-watts input for AM will result in the tube life of the 6146 family by a factor of at least 10-times and even more.  The station at the other end of the QSO will not know the difference in signal strength.

Why would you tune for maximum output with the loading control?  Seems to me you would want to load to Heathkit's recommended current for CW and Phone.  Why would you tune it beyond those limits?

Subject: [Heathkit] DX-100 b general question

Hello, Regarding the tune up and drive of the DX 100.
I peak the grid and dip the plate and adjust the loading control for max output. (which I'm fairly used to now) After that, If I wanted less power output to reduce rf in the house, because I am using a random wire ,Can I cut back on the drive to lower output without damaging the tubes . I would be using the rig for CW. If you have any other questions, I'll try to respond as quick as I can. I am in and out of the house daily.

Many thanks , Andrew Kopke
