Not much activity concerning this particular topic.
I collect old and new metal detectors and because I had built Heath's latest (and last) model back in the 80s, decided to acquire another. I found a nice looking GD-1190 on eBay and after fixing a loose wire or two, it works pretty good.
Next, I found a GD-1290, which was the model I built (but lost in a divorce!).... It too was in excellent condition. However, I doubt it ever worked. In addition to having the wrong voltage battery pack in it, it had about 10 different problems. Luckily, all the parts are still available. Also, thanks for Heath's excellent schematics and 'scope traces!
After 2 transistors, two ICs (one unsocketed), 2 electrolytic caps, and a BUNCH of bad solder connections, it works excellent. Even though it's decades old, it uses the same search frequency as the latest commercial models.
The only 'bad' part is that the PC boards of this vintage, are very fragile and the foil lifts off the board without much help!
Just my ramblings. Too hot (110 degree heat index) to play outside today!!!
