[Heathkit] problems with sb-401

                          After cleaning up the rig and giving it a quick go thru,I decided to align the rig using the heath manual and the procedure with the crystal pack installed. the hep OSC went ok. the carrier gen section also went per the manual. but the voltages seemed a bit low, book says 1to 1.5 vdc I got 1/2 to 3/4 volt at best. Went on to adjust the plate coils. they peaked as they should,but instead of seeing 35 volts was seeing only about 1-1.5 volts. the manual set to fine tune the coild using the s meter set on grid and tune for peak... this produced no reading on the meter. didn't go any further ,as there is a major problem somewhere. 
   the meter I used was a 11megohm input vtvm,with a rf probe. It checks ok. I will put it on the bench and take some voltage and resistance readings. anyone have a idea of what area to start with?
