[Heathkit] Bobs Dilemma

I monitor a lot of lists. I have a lot of different gear and I learn a great
deal from the technical discussions.
For better or worse, it is not uncommon to see gentlemanly discussions where
differences of opinion (or values or interests or ?) morph into something
more intense or intolerant. Thankfully the heavy nastier personal attack
stuff doesn't happen often and the Delete key takes over when it does. I
prefer the delete key to attempting to stifle the verbal scuffle.
However, there are a few folks out there more able and willing to jump in
with a comment that helps to take the heat and intensity down through the
uniqueness of the comment...as opposed to a more direct heavy handed
approach to encourage the return to sensibility, tolerance for others views
and opinions...etc. etc.
Here's a quote by one of these very nice and very smart people who, by what
they said a number of years ago, was able to bring everyone back to a better
state of discourse (for awhile, anyway). He just added a post that displays
his wit, wisdom, and ability to cause the noise level to drop and people to
think about what *they* are saying.
I saved this in my archives because it speaks for me. (Hope you don't
object, D.S. Thank you!)
"I'll probably make someone angry (too bad; get over it), but I'll say it
again:
Bad-actors and childish intolerance for what some think is "off topic"
are readily cured by ignoring, filtering, "delete" keys and the group
dynamic- if you have a group left.
Unless you have a truly sociopathic mod (and they are rare), splintering the
community into specific little specialties is ego-driven and destructive.
But here we are.... join a hundred little "lists" or miss out.
We're being isolated by our egos into tiny little cliques.
We have the most incredible means of sharing information and
cross-pollinating knowledge in history being used as the most isolating and
insulating thing ever.
What a pitiful irony.
I'm never going to know how much I might like your field, because I never
hear about your field.
D.S."

Chris

I miss Twinkies, even though I didn't get to eat them anymore.
My cat's name was Einstein, because he was one stupid old cat.
Then I got Tigger. He was dumb, too.
Crunchy peanut butter is way better than creamy.
I like my dogs Hannah and Dutch,
but cats are still cooler.
Speaking of dogs; they are better on the 4th of July grill.
They cook faster. And relish would be weird on a burger.
