Hi Bruce
 
I think that you have two problems here:
 
1. The warble (when tuning) may be due to the lubrication in the VFO  
tuning capacitor having dried out. This is a common problem with the SB-Line  
valve rigs. You will have to clean and re-grease the tuning capacitors.
 
2. The grease in the epicyclic drive(s) has also dried out. However, I have 
 discovered from personal experience that thinning the grease in the drives 
makes  them feel very lumpy and I had to leave them to dry out a bit before 
they were  useable again. The real solution is to clean them out and repack 
with fresh  grease - I believe that Jackson Bros used some form of fairly 
thick silicon  grease when they were originally manufactured.
