Captain:
First, the DX-60 Function switch must be in the Tune, AM, or CW
position, for the Spot switch on the VFO to work. If you need a really
strong spotting, put the transmitter in Tune position and put the key
down. Normally you won't need to do this, unless you are on a higher
band where the VFO harmonics are weaker or the band has a lot of strong
signals.
Once you can hear an acceptable spotting signal, there are a couple of
ways to spot the VFO:
(1) You can tune in a signal to the preferred pitch and then tune the
VFO so that it matches the pitch of the incoming signal.
(2) You can zero beat the incoming signal with the receiver and then
tune the VFO to zero beat.
or:
(3) You can turn off the receiver BFO, then use the VFO as an outboard
BFO and tune it to bring the incoming signal to zero beat.
