[Heathkit] Heathkit Power Transformers

Ive been thinking the same thing Meir.

I picked up a $10 DX-35 at a hamfest almost 30 years ago since I had built
one and used as a vacation special in the late 50's and it appeared to run
cool.

The later one was given a recap and some way out of tolerance resistors
replaced and has been used intermittently ever since, mostly driving a
linear on AM.

Some years ago when the AC was up around 124-125V I replaced the 5U4 with a
5R4 to reduce the B+ a bit rather than use a bucking transformer. Most other
gear is used with a bucking transformer that handles each bench in the
basement but the DX-35 is up in the attic (where I monitor a few frequencies
while sorting out generations of stored "stuff" to either give away or put
on Craigslist and Ebay) with a HQ-140X and a sorry looking MLA-2500 that
spent years on Pacific DXpeditions ( I wound up owning it since the customer
didnt want to pay rebuild costs after I explained what it needed as it got
pretty soaked on its final trip) but its happy now at a 250W carrier to a
80/40 sloper.

Back in the early 60's I had a DX-40/VF-1 I bought used. I ran the
transmitter for a few hours almost daily, mostly on CW, and some AM. I never
had a problem with it; the transformer was barely warm to the touch. Finally
I sold it after 5 years, when I could afford a used transceiver.
I wonder how many burnt-out transformers were caused by leaky or shorted
caps, rectifier tube internal short, or incorrect component values/wiring
errors.

Most of the equipment didn't have overloaded power transformers. For some
reason, the DX-35 and DX-40 did. However, in the DX-60 the power
transformers do not usually fail. Same for the DX-20. I haven't heard of
any real problems in the DX-100 series or Apache. At least mine are still
going strong. Same for the SB- Line and the HP-23 series power supplies.

I just read the sad story of the demise of the DX-40 power transformer and
Glen
Zook's comments that they often failed after just a few weeks. This begs the

question as to whether most Heathkit ham gear was powered by undersized
power
transformers? Yet, here we are 30 to 40 yrs later and a lot of pieces have
survived with the original transformers still buzzing & humming for our
hamming.
