[Heathkit] SA-2040 instuctions

Chris,

A very quick look at the pictorial section of the instructions for my SA-2040
says:

1- Connect the shorting bar between the center insulator and the single wire
insulator when using a balanced feedline. Connect the balanced feedline between
the center insulator and the outside insulator.
2- Connect the shorting bar between the center insulator and the outside
insulator when using a single wire. Connect the single wire to the single wire
insulator.
3- Connect a coax line to the coax connector.
4- There is a note that says "BE SURE THAT ONLY ONE ANTENNA IS CONNECTED TO YOUR
TUNER AT ONE TIME".

Bill, WA6NEQ

CQ all SA-2040 and SA-2060 users...CQ

I am using my SA-2060 to tune a G5RV and an end fed long wire.
The G5RV feed line is coax, the end fed LW is, yep, a single wire.

My question relates to whether or not the LW can remain connected to the
tuner if there is a coax fed antenna connected to either J1 or J2 coax
inputs on the remote sensor (and vice-versa).

There is a conflict in how the manual describes the hook ups (as I read it
at least).

On page 51 of the manual in paragraph 3, the manual states (I have edited
for brevity):
"3. When you use a single feedline connected to J3, you MUST have NO coax
feedline connected to either J1 or J2 coax inputs...you must then turn the
feedline switch (SW101) to an open connector position. If you do not follow
this procedure, you will have two feedlines in parallel."

The conflicting info is on page 52 in paragraphs 2. and 3. in the
"SINGLE-WIRE ANTENNAS" section.

Here's how the manual describes the hook ups:

2. Connect the antenna to SINGLE WIRE connector J3.....

3. Be sure *either* COAX 1 (J1) *or* COAX 2 (J2) is open. Turn antenna
switch (SW101) to the open jack connection.

Etc, etc.....

I don't have a schematic and haven't popped the hood yet as the tuner is
buried under equipment.  However, I do have my LW and G5RV both hooked up to
the tuner.  I operated on 20, 15 and 10 during the NA QSO party with a TT
580 Delta barefoot and was able to get contacts on all bands.  The only odd
thing I noticed was that while the SWR was always adjusted to be below 1.2
to 1, the TT, while rated at 200 watts input, was only able to muster 50
watts out (CW key down).

When using the G5RV, I turned SW101 to the G5RV position, and when using the
LW, I turned the switch to the open coax position per the instructions on
p52.  The SA-2060 tuned both antennas without issue, and the positions of
the Transmitter and antenna matching caps and the inductors were different
for each antenna suggesting to me,  despite what is said on p51 para 3 of
the manual,  that the antennas are not in parallel.

Lastly, there is no warning in the manual's "Coaxial-Fed Antenna" hook up
instructions that says to disconnect any single or two wire feedlines when
using coax.

(I didn't read p51 that closely when connecting things up initially...went
straight to the specific info on p52.... ignorance is bliss in this case??)

What say all you SA-2060 (and SA-2040) users?  Also, if someone has a
schematic they can scan, I would sure appreciate a copy.

Thanks,
Chris

That looks like some highlymodified TX on the floor. I wonder what that is!
My "elmer" at age 14, 15 or so had a ham band receiver similar to the HR-10B
but I think it was called an RA-1 and it included 160m. That was the only band
he ever

used it on - had a small 10 watt AM xmtr, and the antenna was a half wave
end-fed

L shaped wire fed by a transformer wound on a large diameter former. As I
remember it was

about the size of a porridge oats cannister.

They had a great AM roundtable around Cambridgeshire in East Anglia that was
very active,

both during the days and evenings, and especially on Saturday mornings with a
large number

of check-ins.

apparently I rankled some feathers with my post about the diodes.  I sincerely
apologize. Those few who wanted them, they will be on thier way. I didn't
realize how cheap they were from mouser, whom I did not contact about them.

Live and learn Ronnie and none of my feathers were ruffled. Just a simple
lesson in the power of the Internet. And BTW Ive been using that diode for
decades for all sorts of balanced modulator and demodulators and can
remember when they were about $3 each in the mid 80's. I cant count how many
times Ive used them to replace germanium diodes and tubes in AM and product
detectors from 30's boatanchors to 90's riceboxes. Used 4 yesterday in a
customers 60's National HRO-500 to replace the pair of germaniums in the
product detector......so much less distortion.

Mouser is always my first place to look and set the benchmark to beat.

Hi Chris

I have looked at the schematic for the SA2060A which is not clearly drawn
in respect of the switch SW101. It shows that the output of the tuner is
permanently connected to J3 (single wire) regardless of the switch position.
This may have been a design feature or simply an error that never got
corrected.

You can test this by connecting the tuner to a receiver on say 40m and
connecting just a single wire aerial to each output socket/terminal in turn to
see which give received signals for each position of SW101.

It would appear to require a relatively simple change to allow SW101 to
select a single aerial at a time if you were willing to do that. I am only
working from the manual as I do not have one of these tuners.

Hello,
an HW32 (or 22 or 12) can be seen in the series "white collars" season 2
episode 16, connected to a funny fractal antenna in the search of the
distress signal of a lost UBoot.
