[Heathkit] replacement caps for Heathkit

Thanks guys for the info. I have the Sprague 160Ps and all are the later ones. I am replacing them with
polyester film from Mouser. Sure takes up alot less room. I already had all the new caps I needed, just
was curious about subbing a .22 or .33 for the .25, in other words, up or down in value if the old values
are not found.
I like the orange drop but they are expensive. For this purpose, polyester film or metal film or fine.
Yes indeed, age does play a role in our absent mindedness. I am constantly reminded.

| I am still working on my SB-610 and it brought to mind that Heath used a ton of those black beauty caps
| and it seems that almost all of them are 400VDC or 600VDC and mostly .1, .15, .5 1mfd or .25mfd so
there
| are a bunch that you guys have replaced.
|
| What value do you usually replace them with? Most of the time I have gone up in value but I suspect
that
| going down on some could be ok since these are rarely if ever used in freq. determining circuits.
|
| Give me your thoughts (nothing vulgar, hi, hi) HAPPY NEW YEAR !

|
| Tom, N0JMY has the SB-610 cap kit for $55.75, plus shipping. (This

|
| He and his family do the kits. And they are one of our OWN,

| I can vouch for Tom's stuff having used it in Drake and
| Hallicrafters stuff.
|
| BTW, Sangamo made capacitors under the Black Beauty
| name for many years after the disasterous ones were made.
| The trouble causers were oil-filled. One of the problems
| (but probably not the exclusive one) was that the tube at
| one end through which the oil was added was also one of the
| leads. If the lead was overheated the seal was broken and
| the oil would leak out. Later BB caps were dry. The two can
| be told apart by the look of the leads. The oil filled ones
| have one thick stub at one end, the dry ones have thin leads
| on both ends. The late BB and Orange Drop caps, which have a
| very good reputation, were both described in the same way: a
| combination of paper and polyester dielectric. I think the
| only difference between the late ones was that BB's were
| axial lead and OD's were radial lead.
| Nonetheless, all of these are old enough to be suspect
| even if not the mid-1950's trouble makers.

|
| .22 and .47 are standard values that will work fine and the rest are
| standard values in those yellow 400 and 630V film caps.
|
| Search Fleabay for surplus dealers and those values are usually pretty cheap
| since there are little requirements. If that fails try Mouser.

|
| Black Beauty was a Sprague trademark. At the same time the paper versions
| were made they produced a high quality film version that was used by HP and
| others, all Ive tested are still fine. They have red lettering.
| Production years of both can be found in the yearly Radio Masters.
| The Bumblebee style were also Sprague and a lower cost version of the BB for
| catalogs and cheaper OEM's

| Carl, my error, Sprague is correct. The funny thing is
| that I was just looking at a Sprague ad in an old ARRL
