I can vouch for Tom's stuff having used it in Drake and
Hallicrafters stuff.
BTW, Sangamo made capacitors under the Black Beauty
name for many years after the disasterous ones were made.
The trouble causers were oil-filled. One of the problems
(but probably not the exclusive one) was that the tube at
one end through which the oil was added was also one of the
leads. If the lead was overheated the seal was broken and
the oil would leak out. Later BB caps were dry. The two can
be told apart by the look of the leads. The oil filled ones
have one thick stub at one end, the dry ones have thin leads
on both ends. The late BB and Orange Drop caps, which have a
very good reputation, were both described in the same way: a
combination of paper and polyester dielectric. I think the
only difference between the late ones was that BB's were
axial lead and OD's were radial lead.
Nonetheless, all of these are old enough to be suspect
even if not the mid-1950's trouble makers.
