Duplex would be like a telephone conversation with the XYL. Both are 
talking at the same time and nobody listens what the other is saying. 
This is not a standard mode in ham radio.

To work a repeater you transmit on one frequency and receive on another 
frequency, the frequency difference is called shift. That is exactly 
what this radio does. Only one person talks at any time, the other is 
listening. You either use a PTT or VOX to switch from receive to transmit.
