Nope!  The calibrator was an additional cost accessory.  You just need to make sure that you stay within the band segment which your license class allows.

Subject: [Heathkit] HW-32 Question

I just recently purchased an HW-32 on eBay.  There is an empty socket on 
the chassis which is marked Calibrator.  Is it necessary for this piece 
to be in place for the radio to work correctly?
