Well said, Mike.  And I'll add that you can have loads of fun without  
superior performance.  CX and SKN events are loads of fun because we use  older, 
not state of the art equipment and still make them work.  Last time  I did 
Field Day, while everyone else was at their fancy highpowered rigs, I set  
up a hammock, put a gel cell powered HW-7 and a straight key on my belly  and 
had a blast.
