The HX-10 does have AM. However, it is not plate modulated AM like the TX-1 Apache, etc. Many SSB transmitters of that era did have AM capabilities although generally at considerably reduced power levels.
The TX-1 Apache also requires the SB-10 for SSB operation. You REALLY don't want to modify a DX-100 or DX-100B to use with the SB-10. Not only is it quite a bit of work, the VFO in the DX-100 and DX-100B are really not stable enough for SSB. Yes, there is an occasional unit that is more stable than the others. But, generally, the VFO is just not that stable in frequency.

Now I am confused. Everything that I read on the HX-10 says it is also AM. Go here for a quick look:

As far as the TX-1 and RX-1 are concerned they match cosmetically and have built in SSB capabilityas well as AM & CW but the DX-100 and the RX-1 match in band coverage of 160 - 10. The DX-100 will do SSB with the SB-10 adapter.
