Hi John
 
1. I found a note from Mike WA8BXN which says:  
"1N295 and 1N34 both cross reference to NTE109, so I would try some 1N34's  
In the ECG xref they are a little different, with the 1N34 having a higher  
voltage rating. Probably worth a trip to Radio Shack if you don't have  
1N34's in stock!" 
According to the data sheet the 1N295 is a point contact germanium diode 
with  a maximum average forward current rating of 50mA and a breakdown voltage 
of 40V.  No mention of frequency or capacitance though. 
2. For your information all solid carbon (or carbon composition) resistors  
age high over a period of many years and should all be treated as suspect. 
Check  the meter movements for the dreaded green rot disease as well.
