Not wanting to start or feed an off-topic thread, but...

I think if you read the fine print on Facebook and/or Twitter, you
will find vaguely phrased permissions for them to read your "cookies"
and other storage areas on your computer. This is to gather marketing
information to target advertise the account you are subscribed from.
I haven't read it in a while, but I think you also give them permission
to scan for address books. I think Google falls in there too... (not
necessarily their search engine, but google apps) There are probably
others.

Always read the fine print. They don't give those services away. They
are making money on them somehow. Selling people's marketing habits
and preferences is worth a lot of money.
