6.? Loosened and retightened all screws that were responsible for
grounding anything, including one of the screws that holds the PA
shield in place (couldn't get at the other one).

Hi Rick,
I just had to do the same thing to the same shield in my Johnson Ranger.
It was necessary for me to do all three (I haven't looked in my DX-100
yet). One of them is inaccessible without removing some other
subassemblies first. That part was very painful, especially getting
those other subassemblies installed back into the transmitter again. Two
of the screws for those subassemblies required almost an hour of trying
- each!. It was worth the trouble because now all of the spurious
oscillation is *GONE*. One day when you don't have distractions or
pressure I would recommend revisiting that "other one" and making sure
it is doing it's job. I lost a lot of time in a contest working on my
Ranger. I tried doing just the two I could get to easily and thought I
had fixed it. I had only improved it. I had to open it again and then do
the real work for that last screw. Isn't running old gear wonderful?
