It doesn't look like it's going to be any one cure.  So far I have 
reversed the SB-10 modification, tightened up some mounting screws 
that grounded things, removed a couple of wires that connected from 
"someplace" to "noplace" (i.e. the ends were just left hanging), and 
replaced all the caps in the PA stage.  Each of those seems to have 
helped... for example, the clamping now works, and I can get the grid 
current up to 5 ma like it's supposed to be, but while I'm getting 
closer, it still isn't working right.
