Rick,
On Heathkit stuff, especially early ones, you just HAVE to remember what 
everyone is telling you.  Heath bought up TONS of surplus parts in the 40's 
and 50's and used them in the kits.  The engineers often put odd values, and 
series'd or paralleled parts to make a circuit work.  It is just a fact of 
life with these.  If you wish to put in the 20k value, the circuit won't 
care.  I have never worked on the DX-100 series, but have the DX-35 and 40 
series, and the same things are found there.  It's just what they had to put 
in the kits.  The engineers probably didn't like it much either, but you do 
what the boss says, hi.
