[Heathkit] DX-100B on Phone - bad audio distortion /oscillation

There are "official" Heath modifications and there are "other" modifications.  Heath had several modification kits for the DX-100 / DX-100B.  For the DX-100 only there was the MK-3 which changed the loading control from a 150 pf variable with switched fixed capacitors to the continuously variable loading control (this came "standard" in the DX-100B).  DX-100 transmitters with this kit installed were unofficially known as DX-100A.  That is one of the reasons that the next version was called the DX-100B.

The other modification kits applied to both the DX-100 and the DX-100B.

There was the kit for "improved keying" which also provided a "spotting" switch.

There was a kit to modify both the DX-100 and DX-100B to use the SB-10 SSB adapter.

I have the information on these "official" modifications as well as other information on the DX-100 some of which was never widely distributed.  For this information go to:

I disagree, you need some way to turn on the oscillator (VFO or crystal) to "spot" your transmit
frequency with your receiver.  (the design engineers must not have operated the DX-100 on the air
for 6 months before pressing them into production)
