[Heathkit] Power cords

Every now and then the subject of Heathkit power cords comes up.
I have a suggestion FWIW
I am not a hacker. I don't modify anything if it doesn't need it. But, IMHO,
some times improvements justify the modification.
There is a small IEC 3 pin ac power inlet and mating cord available which
comes very close to fitting the existing cutout on the Heathkit chassis. It
is Schurter 4300.0100 (Mouser P/N 693-4300.0100). This is not to be confused
with the larger IEC "computer" power connectors and cords.
The width is less than the existing cutout. The height is about 0.090"
greater than the existing cutout. The mounting centers are the same as
existing. I wouldn't recommend removing material from the power inlet
connector but I guess that is a possibility. A couple swipes with a file
should enlarge the chassis hole to accept the connector as is.
Changing to this connector and mating cord will provide you with a proper
polarized and grounded ac power connection to the Heathkit and it is quite
inexpensive.
I have not yet changed any of my Heathkits to this connector but I have used
it on other old test equipment to provide a neat 3 wire power connection
less obtrusive than the "computer" power inlet and cord. I fully intend to
add it to my SB-301 , 401 and 303 soon.
Just a suggestion. No worse than the sets I see that have had one or more of
the RCA jacks hacked out for a SO-239.
