On the topic of the now hard-to-get and expensive 6GW8, I have seen mention of a plug-in solid state device using a MOSFET to replace beam power tubes such as 6V6, 6BQ5, et. al. The text and schematic is available at:

I can envision a 6GW8 version having an additional gain stage to replace the 6GW8's triode as well as the pentode, plus a power resistor to take up the heater current to keep SB/HW heater strings balanced. 

Or, hybridizing the concept to address aesthetic concerns, an adaptor having a soiled-state triode replacement inside, and a 6AQ5 or 6BQ5 sticking out the top...
