You are very persistent, Dick.  It will pay off in the end.  These rigs 
are fairly straightforward.  Here are some observations I've made in 
restoring an HW-100 and completely rebuilding an SB-101, which is mostly 
the same design.

The power cable does fail in various ways.  I once had a bias problem 
similar to yours, spent a long time trying to troubleshoot inside the 
rig, worked my way back to the power cable and discovered an 
intermittent on the connector.

The coil slugs are hard to find, but the complete band switch boards and 
single coils are readily available on the Internet - 
oldheathkitparts.com is one place, eBay is another.
