Its a pity that your son hasnt someone better to look up to for ham radio.
Contesters include 100W and QRP stations honing their skills. You should try
it sometime. Over the years Ive managed a bit over 200 countries with 5W or
less. Doing it in a contest takes skill you obviously dont want to acquire.
However it just may come in handy in a disaster.
