I had the same problem with a condenser checker which used one
of those, and which only cost $25, less than a replacement tube.

I found the 6BD5GT. Uses same octal socket, but needs some rewiring.

Vital stats...

	6L6GA	6BD5GT
	-----	------
Vhtr	6.3V	6.3V
Ihtr	0.9A	0.9A
Vp	350V	325V (surge 4000V)
Vg2	=Plate	325V
Pp Max	12W	10W
Pg2 Max	2.7W	3.0W
Ip	140mA	300mA (Ik, actually)
Gm	4700um
Rp	1.7k
Rl	5k
mu	8

Pin	6L6GA	6BD5GT
---	-----	------
1	S/NC	G1
2	Htr	Htr
3	Plate	K/G3
4	G2	NC
5	G1	Plate
6	NC	NC
7	Htr	Htr
8	K/G3	G2

4->8->3->5->1 rewire would be required.

Here's a quote from the Sylvania tech ref manual for 1951:

" For curve data, reference should be made to type 6L6G, to
which type 6BD5GT is similar up to its wattage rating."

The 6BD5GT goes for $3.00 in single quantity.
