[Heathkit] Glass beading

Hi, just HAD to stick in my $.02 worth......
I have had a large cabinet type glass beader for years and use it
frequently. I use to build drag cars and now do a lot of street rod /
motorcycle stuff. The previous replies are correct, to a degree. I have
NEVER warped any sheet metal using glass beads. I have done a ton of
small alum parts for radios and cars / motorcycles. The finish is
always a nice, smooth, uniform color.
Now, if one were to use "Black Diamond" abrasive, that's a different
matter. That stuff is waaay too abrasive for alum and I use it just for
rust removal.
Just this week, I re-did a Drake MS-4 speaker with the glass beads and
it came out perfect. Carl is right, use primer after wiping with the
BEST de greaser, I have ever found......lacquer thinner. Leaves NO
residue and evaporates immediately.
I've used aircraft stripper, elbow grease, etc. Nothing is faster,
cleaner or better than glass beads. IMHO

You have to be careful here, particularly with perforated (sp?)metal as
the
blasting may "peen" the sheet surface causingwaves & distortion. Good
question
for the list though.------------------------------

Has anyone tried bead blasting a Heath SB series cabinet to remove the
old
paint? I have a SB-101, SB-610 and a SB-600 cabinet that have seen
better
days paint-wise. Rather than sand these by hand I was thinking of
getting a
small bead blaster gun from Harbor Freight and trying that.
Thanks,
Walt - WB2VSJ

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll take the advice and spend the
money on
a good stripper (The one in a can!) just to be safe.

Right on, I use a thing called "Aircraft Paint Stripper" that I buy at
my local auto parts store. Some of the old baked enamel is difficult to
remove and requires two or three applications, but it is better than
the
bead blasting. Bead blasting also deforms the metal to a small degree
if you use too much air pressure. Removing paint from aluminum panels
with stripper is a snap. That is the best alternative.

I wouldnt bead blast any thin sheet.aluminum. Crushed walnut shells is
a
milder media that works well and is readily available at low cost.
The chemical strippers rarely get into the perforations completely and
leave
behind a ragged mess. Finish off with lacquer thinner and a small file
to
clean the holes.
Then rinse completely with lacquer thinner, wipe down with a clean rag,
keep
your cotton picking fingers off the metal, spray a thin coat of self
etching
primer, and your top coat of choice.

I use glass beads all the time in my work BUT........the secret is to
run
low air pressure (60LBS) and don't hold the blast nozzle in one place
for a
long time. As Carl had mentioned, walnut shells work good but they do
leave
a rougher surface than glass beads.
Have a good weekend.

Hi:
I'm looking to spruce up one of my SB 101's. It's complete except for a
damaged
0 - 99 khz wheel and the clear plastic widow it displays thru.
I'll buy a good replacement or trade for these parts.
Thanks

These seem like pretty complicated ways to do this.
The cases aren't THAT big :)
An electric sander or plain old sandpaper and a little elbow grease out
to do
the job in a jiffy (depending on your definition of a 'jiffy').

Depends on air pressure and nozzle size Gary. A slightly rough texture
takes
primer better and works great for wrinkle and other textures.
I prefer my toys, Ive earned them. Manual labor doesnt have a green
