[Heathkit] HG10B Dial Drum String

I obtained a nice HG10B and am trying to restring the cord that rotates 
the drum...I have the manual and have followed it to the letter but 
can't get it to work properly.Anyone have any tips on this problem?

I very much appreciate hearing from people that have successfully gotten 
this darn thing to work. I feel like a dunce here but it is driving me 
nuts..
