I remember reading a "mod" years ago in a magazine, stating that the
6AU6 was used in the original design but later changed to 6HS6 for
better performance. It was the author's opinion that the improvement
wasn't that noteworthy, and the 6HS6 ran hotter and had shorter life
than the 6AU6. His opinion was that the tubes should be changed back to
6AU6. I tried it in my (long gone) HW101, worked fine. I didn't have
the equipment at that time to do any real measurements, but I could
still hear lots of stuff.
