My favorite thrift shoppe coughed up a real nice GR-81. I replaced a
frozen regen control. Checked and double-checked the wiring, touched up a
couple of solder joints, replaced a BB cap, tested the tubes and slowly
brought the little set to life.
It plays as sweetly as a GR-81 should and I enjoyed copying CW and SSB on
160 - 20 meters. It took a bit of playing to get used to fine tuning SSB on
40 and 20 with the regen control. Calibration was spot on at 2.5, 5.0 and
10 Mhz, real close at 15 Mhz. WWV copied easily on all frequencies.
AM on the BCB and Shortwave bands was awesome up through 10 Mhz. Sounded
better than many of my receivers.
Has anyone repainted the cover and ended up with a color match that was
either a perfect match or really close? If so, please let me know. An
internet search didn't help..I presume not many folks put any money into
these guys. My cover has a couple of boo-boos where the paint is chipped.
Since these are the only noticeable cosmetic issues, I thought I would fill
the chips and either retouch or repaint the cover. I can take it down to
Sherwin Williams but thought I would ask here first.
Thanks!
Chris
