[Heathkit] SB-301 questions

I just got a SB-301 and have a couple of questions.  I noticed you can
pull the AF Gain knob out but it does not seem to make any difference.
What is suppose to happen with it pulled out?  Can I remove 6the CW
filter and still haave the rx work?? To me the 400htz filter just
kills the rx, I never have liked filters.
