Duane,
I learned about being picky AND choosy as to warranty cards regarding
WHICH to send in AND which NOT to send in.
Almost 40 years ago my Wife, newly married for less than a year, worked
for an organization that was ALREADY data mining the warranty cards.
She spent her workday entering the "Black & Decker" grass trimmer cards
into a computer system via punch cards.
Identity Theft is entirely something different. I've been that path,
AND it wasn't by ANY failure on my Wife's or Mine. It was caused by a
typographical error by a bank in Ohio whom transposed a couple of digits
of a Social Security Number of one of their customers.
He went into debt, didn't pay bills, THEN a collection agency started
calling me! That took months to straighten out, even though it took
only about five minutes for the collection agency to identify the error
and make note that I was NOT the one they were after. I had to file a
criminal complaint, get a copy, write up all the pertinent information,
have it notarized and sent a copy of what had become a "book" to THE bank.
My whole point is that while theft of property IS treated different that
theft of "intellectual property rights". In some number of the States
of this country, I would have the right to shoot the crook IF said
individual did so in my presence..
I have no beef with copyrights. I simply stated that they were NOT
enforced for quite some time. This gentleman is going to have a
difficult time putting the Genie BACK into the bottle.
