If you cannot locate a replacement you can make a drive that will work fine. Use a piece of either 1/4th inch diameter rod or brass tubing cut to the proper length and epoxy a rubber grommet of the proper diameter onto the end. The grommet will provide sufficient friction to move the dial and will be smooth tuning as well. The sides of the grommet go on either side of the hole in the dial.

I recently acquired a DX-40 which I have refurbished, then a VF-1 to go with it. The VF-1 has a dial drive problem, the friction drive (Heath PN 100-M44) has been broken and badly repaired. Anyone have a junker VF-1 out there who is willing to part it out?
