Ok guys, I just discovered something I had not noticed in the 38 years
I have been using my HW100, servicing and modifying it.
There has always been a problem with poor power output on the 10M
band. I exhausted all the possible causes long ago and followed all
the steps recommended. I even squeezed and expanded the add-on 10M
tank coil that sets on top. Nothing worked so I just gave up until
now.
I was working on the tank load capacitor which had gotten very tight
over the years. The shaft is fine and so is the bearing, just hard to
turn so I cleaned the thing with some CRC and then lubed it the best I
could, short of the dreaded removing of the cage and tuning capacitor,
and it has loosened up considerably. Enough for that.
Then I happened to notice that the last 3 turns (part of the 10M band
switching section) of the tank coil on my original coil, are wound at
an angle slanted toward the rear of the rig, out of the coil form
grooves and unevenly spaced. I wonder if this is the root of my 10M
tuning problem.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone who has a final tank coil
that they can look at, would check and compare it with my
observations. This fine radio works as great as the day I built it in
1970 except for the low 10M output (about 50-60W).
