The modification kit did NOT do away with the 160 meter coil. It was to replace the fixed value loading capacitors in parallel with a smaller value variable capacitor to a continuously variable arrangement.
Those DX-100 transmitters were unofficially "officially" called DX-100A transmitters and therefore the next version of the DX-100 series was called the DX-100B.
Both my original DX-100 (from 1960) and my present DX-100 have the modification kit installed as well as the spotting switch modification that was another Heath modification kit.

I know Heathkit came out with a modification to remove the loading switch and capacitors and replace them with a variable capacitor like the DX-100B. I don't know if they do away with the 160 meter coil. Could it be this mod was worked and it does away with the 160 meter coil, possibly to make room for the variable capacitor? Just a thought. I have 2 each DX-100 that I got in a lot of 24 boat anchors. I have not looked at them but I can. One would have to be in very bad condition for me to cannibalize it. However, I might trade you the 160 meter coil for the modification kit if such is the case. Look up the mod and see what it does. Let me know if you want me to inspect mine. Thanks.
