If anyone is interested in an EXCELLENT (and cheap!!) digital dial,
they need look NO further than N3ZI. I have 2 of his kits, the latest
for 'vintage' radios with multiple IFs. How the heck can you go wrong
for a SIMPLE kit for $29.?????!!!!!

I got the SB-303 recap kit from Tom (www.hayseedhamfest.com)
yesterday. Hey thanks Tom!
These caps are the proper axials.
The big 2200 and the other XICONs have a black stripe on the side
marked
" - - -". One end of the cap is black. Does that mean that's the
"minus" end?
The other caps, the Nichicons, have "-" arrows pointing to one end.
That's the "minus" end of the cap, correct?
I had been stalled on an SB-303 project for a while for a couple
reasons. This 303 has a low level AC hum in spite of replacing the main
capacitor.
I'm guessing one of my 500 ufd electrolytics is bad. Given that 303's
are 30+ years old, it's not a bad idea to do a total recap of the
electrolytics. I started a couple times to order a full set of caps,
quantity 100 or 250, with the idea of selling off the excess as kits.
I was overjoyed that Tom stepped up to the plate so that I would not
have to do that.
I've been much too sick to take on a project like ordering and
rebagging
a couple thousand capacitors, advertising them, taking orders and
mailing them. I'm doing a better but still, given this economy, I'm
focussed on my day job. Don't know if anyone here has noticed but the
economy has gotten kinda weird.
Any of you with a '303 or '313, Tom
has the caps. Get em while their
hot!!!
Back to this '303.
I've got a series of reversible upgrades planned for mine. Some of this
is experimental and might not work out but we'll see.
1) The recap using Tom's kit, get rid of the AC hum.
2) Clean the LMO and get it stable. The '303's LMO is capable of a few
cycles per hour stability. These radios are amazing.
3) Lead shot in the main tuning knob. Makes it smooth.
4) Polish the knobs and the visible plastic. Paint the cabinet to
freshen up the look.
5) Tighten the bandpass. I have a '303 with two 2.1 ssb filters in
series. Cuts down the blowby a lot. I have some ideas for doing this at
a low cost.
6) Open up the bandpass. I have a '313 with the 5 kHz AM filter. I'd
like a 10 kHz AM filter. I've heard there's an LC filter mod. That
would be better for the '313.
7) PSK31 and other digital modes on the back panel. If it's all done
in software, is the '303 stable enough? Morse code, RTTY, slowscan,
etc.
8) Digital readout inside the 303.
http://www.qrpkits.com/freqcounter.html has a small counter. Not as
sophisticated as the AADE but the price is nice. It might fit in the
[1...2...3...4...5] window. I'd only put it inside if it were
reversible, otherwise I'd put it in a small Heath looking station
control box.
I'd call a radio with all the mods an SB-304.

Actually, no. On common axial electrolytic caps, the black end (which
is an
insulating material) will be your positive lead. It's also identified
by
the indented ring or groove near one of the ends.
The can, or body, is negative, so you will note that the negative lead
is
attached directly to it.

That's affirmative, Sarge.

Could also be a ground-loop, too.

Thanks for the kind words, Cory. We've sold about 180 can-type caps and
kits since February, thanks to our wonderful customers and friends.
Most
recently we've started stocking the multi-section can-cap for the
Hammarlund
HQ-129X. We also did our first prototype Halli SX-117. On the Heathkit
front, we stock DX-60, DX-100, HR-10, HW-16, SB-301, SB-303 (no cans),
SB-310, SB-313 (no cans), and SB-401, in both complete recap kits and
cans
only. The rest we can get on about 2 weeks notice. We also stock many
Drake units including the 2-A, 2-B, most R-4 variants, T-4, T-4X, most
TR-4's and the TR-4C.
Couldn't do it without the generous technical help of many folks from
this
list.
I apologize for this shameless outburst of capitalism, but after all,
Cory
tee'd it up so perfectly, hi HI!
Tnx again es vy 73,

To the list and Joe
Hi Joe
Don't think you will find the original parts kit to change the
power supply to an "A" model.
I recently installed a crowbar circuit in my Heath supply. I used the
schematic form ARRL Handbook, titled 28-V high current supply. The 20 A
secondary20fuse will have to be moved to "see" raw voltage and add the
crowbar,
I used a 15V zener in my design. Also added a BIG diode from the
regulated
output to the "raw" DC input to handle back-flow. Simple but it works..

Does any one know if I can find a source for parts to upgrade the(
HP-1144
PS to a HP-1144A ? As it happens my HP-1144 does not have the crowbar
circuit included, on the regulator board an did some nasty things to my
SB-104A's "A" & "B" boards, and possibly rhe Output Transistors when the
un-soldered ground pin came loose from the regulator board. (poor kit
building )
Any and advice will be appreciated

Hi all;
I need a schematic for the Astron LS-35A 28volt power supply. I will pay
for copying and mailing. Thank you,

In all my 'inifinite wisdom' and 'computer expertise' I apparently
erased
the message requesting an Astron 24V PS schematic.
What model were you looking for? I have most Astron schematics on hand
here. Looking them over, the 24V and 12V are basically the same with
only
a few component changes and of course higher voltage transformer and
higher ratings for the pass transistors and capacitors.

Same concern but an external crowbar (zener/SCR) will do just as well. I
use them in my homebrew supplies.
