[Heathkit] Calibrating VF-1?

I am having a lot of trouble getting my VF-1 calibrated. Anyone know of 
a simple procedure. I have followed the procedure in the book with 
little success. I can get the 80 meter calibrated only at the low end 
and it is always about 20 Khz high. When I tune up the band it will jump 
about 100 Khz. I notice that I have to adjust the core all the way 
inside the 160/80 meter coil to get even close to calibration. I am 
getting about the same results on 40 meters. Also, I notice that I only 
have about half the drive from the VF-1 as I do the crystal on the AT-1.
