[Heathkit] HR-10 AVC?

I have a HR-10 that orks just fine on CW and SSB because I use it with the AVC OFF.

There has been no local AM activity that I have been able to hear in a couple of years. But when I run the signal generator into it with AM and the AVC ON it responds strangely. As I tune to the signal generator the S-Meter first goes negative before it goes positive. I have never seen an AVC circuit like HR-10 has so I don't quite know what to expect.

I learned radio in the USAF in the 50's so I think I know how an AM receiver should behave. I have had a ticket since 1957. This one has been strange to me.

The IFs are not going int oscillation!
