I have done it and it works well.  My basic approach was:

1. Put a  Heath AM filter from the SB-30X receivers in the HW-101 in 
place of the SSB filter.

2. Add a diode be the AM detector and change the product detector to 
just a audio preamp stage.

3. Put the carrier null (balance) control onto the front panel (I 
mounted it in the headphone jack hole) and adjust for about 25 watts 
carrier injection.

I have more details at home in my documentation for the HW-101-AM 
project.

I noticed a couple of the Heath AM filters on eBay recently.

There have also been similar conversion projects in Electric Radio 
magazine.
