I use mine all the time on HB stuff.
I want to find one with smaller (400 or less) PF

I have noticed a lot of Heath and EICO resistance and capacitance subsituion
boxes on eBay.
When I strated working as a techenician in the late 50's the engineers would
do all their callculations with a SLIDERULE ann the after the breadboard was
working the would break put the substituion boxes and tweak the design to
make it work the way it was intended to.
Do GlowBug experimenters use these things. They are cheap enough.
