Hello there KI0KM. Where have you been holed up at for X months, or is it
years? I have not heard that booming signal of yours in way too long of a
time.
Of course the HT-40 is superior. It is a Hallicrafters! (Chuckle) However,
in this particular case, it honestly is a better engineered product.
Although Hallicrafters is known more for their receivers than their
transmitters, it is several of those transmitters that seem to get mentioned
all of the time by everyone associated with Hallicrafters! Such as the HT-4,
AKA BC-610, 400 watt, and 390 pound, AM TX that survived the attack on Pearl
Harbor in December of 1941. What many of you may not know, is that TX was
Bill Halligan's personal unit! Hallicrafters had a contract with the
military to build X of them, but production was way behind due to material
shortages, so the FBI came to Bill at his home and asked if he would sell
them his HT-4? Bill said no, but he would lease it to them. So the FBI
loaded it up and transported it to the big island of Hawaii atop a hill.
It was the 'only' surviving transmitter after the attack with enough power
to reach the USA mainland direct. It was used to contact Washington, D.C. to
report the attack.
I have often wondered what ever became of that historic HT-4? Who knows,
perhaps one of the vintage radio group owns it and does not even know it! I
would suspect, although I do not know for sure, that the serial number would
be very low since Bill Halligan owned it.
You can read, see and hear more about all of this on the HHRP DVD's and CD's
produced from 85% never before released documents, audio and video of Bill
Halligan. Check it out at:
