Hi Earl:
First off, let me commend you on an excellent choice
of amplifier. The SB-200 is perhaps, the best
value/bang-for-the-buck amp out there. My comments to
follow.
>My question is, about what is it going to cost me to
bring it up to
date with
power supply mods ect. I would also like to put it on
6 meters.
The Harbach board was mentioned. It's well worth the
cost for such an upgrade. The other alternative (as
was mentioned) is to replace the caps with the snap
ons. I prefer the former as it is a sanitary method of
fully upgrading the '200/201 with new stuff. I
personally like sanitary retrofits myself.
I agree on the 6 meter mod comments: why would you
want to molly up a perfectly fine amplifier? If you
must, switch to a dedicated 6 meter amp. Or look for a
"junker" to modify. I'm sure there are plenty of units
out there.
But I do disagree on the current inrush protection
comment. I highly suggest adding this item into your
amplifier. It is another potential unit to fail but
the way I take a look at it is that you can have a
$1.00 part to fail or a $100 or more part (i.e. the
power transformer) fail. I think you see the economics
in this. Besides, why needlessly hammer the power
transformer with those annoying inrush 'thuds'?
>Any comments would be appreciated, especially about
the 6 meter mod.
>My soldering/construction skills I guess would be
above average but my
technical skills (knowledge of circuitry) would be
average at best.
Ahem! Don't forget that there were others out there
like you who built these kits who had less knowledge
on electronics but the kits turned out to be
excellent. You should be able to do the same. Or
contact the rest of us on this net and you should be
able to get help here!
Good luck es 73 de Cal, N6KYR/8
