[Heathkit] Value of an SX-73, R274 ??

Hi John:

You picked an interesting receiver to discuss. I've had two of them and
they work well and deliver that band cruiser effect. They are not easy to
mate to a transmitter for ham ops due to AVC charging from the near field
RF. Hallicrafters added a relay to deal with this but not all the Halli R
274's have it. Some of the parts are hard to find too.
The first one I paid $75 (good condition) from a friend and the other I paid
$45 (poor condition) at an auction.
The condition of your receiver will determine the value of it. I did see a
very good Halli R 274 go for $600 (excellent condition, reliable seller) on
Ebay. Since the radio is fairly scarce in the SW states they don't show up
at all anymore at the fests here. If they did, a typical seller would
probably ask exactly the same as what Ebay is getting for a prime machine
regardless of what the condition of theirs is.
To answer your question directly, here's what I think the Market value is:
$600 for a top notch machine sold on Ebay
$500 for a top notch machine sold off of Ebay
$300 for average quality/condition
$250 for a closet queen (fix me!)
$100 for a parts only machine
I can't respond to the low-high price question because they just don't show
up enough to make a guess.
On a side note I just bought a SP 600 and CV 591 ssb converter (both good)
for $120 from a friend. Two weeks ago a guy beat me out of an Eldico SSB 100
MIL at the Scottsdale hamfest. He had a $20 bill and all I had was $15 on
me! The seller was dumping iron and had no interest in ham radio. He was
literally giving the stuff away. So sometimes anything goes with the cost of
the gear and the numbers I just gave you are not fixed in stone.
