St. Patrick’s Birthday

‘Twas the eighth day of March, as some people say,
That St. Patrick at midnight, first saw the day.
But others maintain ‘twas the ninth he was born,
And ‘twas all a mistake between midnight and morn.
For mistakes will occur in the hurry and shock,
And some blame the baby and some blame the clock.
But for all their cross questions sure no one would know
If the child was too fast or the clock was too slow.
Now the first faction fight in old Ireland they say,
Was all on account of St. Patrick’s day.
Some fought for the eighth; for the ninth more would die;
And if one didn’t see right, they blackened his eye.
And at last both factions so positive grew,
That each claimed a birthday and Pat then had two.
Till Father Mulcary who showed them their sins,
Said, "Nobody can have two barthdays but a twins,
Don’t be always a-foightin’ for eight or for noine,
Don’t be always divoidin’ but sometimes comboine.
Comboine eight with noine – siventeen is the mark.
Let that be his barthday!" "Amen," says the clark,
"For if he isn’t a twins, sure history will show,
That he’s worth any other two saints that we know."
Then they all got blind drunk which completed their bliss,
And they keep up the practice from that day to this.
