I use another RX on the bench to do carrier null on whatever I'm working on. 
More sensitive than a scope, and you get to hear what is actually coming out
on the air - including any low level noise or hum that may be creeping into
the transmit chain somewhere.

A Radio Shack DX400 is one of the best pieces of test gear I ever bought....
