[Heathkit] RX-1 SSB Audio Problem

I have a recently acquired RX-1.In general it works OK but has one 
major problem. The received audio on SSB is very distorted. Reducing 
the RF/IF gain does not really improve it. On SSB it uses a 6CS6 as 
BFO/Product-Detector. (The audio on AM is fine so its not the AF 
amp). Anybody have any thoughts?

Are there any published mods for the RX-1.
