I think the big find was this story:
Early last year a ham called me from northern NJ and offered me an
estate full of old radios. It was about 3 hours from my home and all
of the radios described were of the wooden broadcast type. The owner
was the Sister of the deceased, and she wanted to clear out his home,
and probably sell it. She wanted one buyer to take all the radios at
one time. I decided I didn't want to do all that work for radios
that I really wasn't interested in. (If I got them, I'd have to sell
most - and I thought better of all that work.)
I set her up with the New Jersey Antique Radio Club. The deal they
made was - they would clear everything out, sell them at auction, and
split the money with the Sister. She was happy with that.
So one day several members with vans and large RVs showed up and
unloaded everything. I'm told the vans were "cock-full." The members
took all the radios to the clubs store house and unloaded. As they
were carrying in the radios, there were a few that had not been seen
before, so they were set aside. After the unloading was done these
radios were examined. One, upon opening, had a towel wrapped up
inside. When the towel was unwrapped, $10,000 in one-hundred and
fifty dollar bills fell out. Everyone was dumbfounded.
A quick examination of all the remaining radios was done with nothing
else found. A telephone call the Sister was made, and the money was
returned. She passed some money back to the club, thanking them for
their honesty. It seemed the brother had hid the money, then later
on thought someone had robbed him when he couldn't find it.
So the radio was named, "The $10,000. Radio."
That's my story, and here is the NJARC version....
