[Heathkit] Polishing aluminum part of SB-series escutcheon

Has anyone here been successful in polishing the aluminum part of the 
SB-series escutcheon?  This is the part above the main tuning knob where 
it says "H e a t h k i t" in raised letters.

I have one that is rather scuffed.  I'm wondering if a polishing agent 
or rubbing compound would renew its look.  I realize this would mean 
touching up the black paint on the raised letters.

Any ideas?
