Bert,
    The Beryllium Oxide is really nothing to worry about.  It is only
hazardous if it is hammered or smashed.  As long as it is in that one large
block it is entirely safe.  Many modern high power semiconductors still use
beryllium oxide.  Don't worry about this issue.
    I would be far more concerned about getting burned on the heat sink.  It
does get VERY hot if you use the amp for any length of time.  Just remember
to keep your hands, and everything else, away from the heat sink.  Also,
make sure that there is good air circulation around the heat sink.
    These are really not big issues.  The 8873 tube should be your primary
concern.  Replacement 8873 tubes are difficult to find, and can be really
expensive.
