The HW-104s used phenolic ? boards and later SB-104s and SB-104As used
fiberglass boards. I have a listing of all the different levels of boards
and what the changes were between them ........somewhere around here. I
think it's a great Transceiver and deserves more attention. There were
also --many-- very sharp hams (were or became EEs) who modified and
improved the unit ...some to the extent that you would not even recognize
the frontend any more, with relay bandswitching, diplexers, additional
filtering, better grounding paths, etc. It's a great little rig to modify
and tinker with, even today. From personal experience many, many boards
were swapped between all three levels of units.
The HW-5400 is better but the level if integration and overall room
leaves you wishing you could work on it ....nature of hams, I guess.
There were many more 104s made than 5400s and the 104s are still green
like Heathkits should be ....or grey.

Somewhere over the years I read somewhere that there
was a concern about the integrity of the 104 circuit
board materials.
Was that nonsense or did they have a problem with part
of the series that started to show up 10 or 15 years ago?
What parallels have you noted between the TR7 and 104A?
I always loved the TR7.
